Pro-Mata opens a Bird Observation Tower

The structure provides for the implementation of research methodologies involving bird observations

The Pró-Mata Private Natural Heritage Reserve (RPPN) held the official opening of the Bird Observation Tower, a structure that allows students and researchers to develop studies with these animals. The occasion was attended by the substitute for the Superintendent of the Brazilian Institute for the Environment and Renewable Natural Resources (IBAMA), Paulo Guilherme Carniel Wagner.

Bird Watching Tower

The Pró-Mata Bird Watching Tower is a metallic structure with three floors high (12m), with the purpose of allowing the observation of birds next to the upper stratum of the trees. In addition, the tower provides a view of the Arroio Bananeiras valley. Its initial construction was sponsored by Fundação Grupo Boticário and was completed with funds from the Instituto do Meio Ambiente at PUCRS (IMA), obtained through a service provision contract.

Professor at the School of Health and Life Sciences Carla Fontana develops research at the Museum of Science and Technology (MCT) at PUCRS, where she is the curator of the bird and mammal collections, in addition to coordinating the Ornithology Laboratory. The researcher explains about the scientific use of the tower for the observation of birds in the forest canopy, which could be subsampled from the ground.

“The observation of birds, from the tower, could be an additional resource to our monitoring of birds in the RPPN Pró-Mata and will certainly facilitate the implementation of research/teaching methodologies that involve bird watching”, says the professor .

In addition, Fontana points out that all projects that are developed at Pró-Mata and that have the participation of undergraduate and graduate students will be able to take advantage of the structure of the Observations Tower. Eventually, some research directly associated with the Tower will be developed, always with the support and guidance of Professor Fontana.
