Research

On the basis that a strong multidisciplinary research effort is needed to meet today’s global societal challenges, UGOT Challenges is a six-year initiative that started in 2016. All areas have significant multidisciplinary elements. The UGOT Challenges six research areas are

University of Gothenburg cooperates with universities all over the world in international networks and projects and had more than 10 000 joint publications with researchers from other countries between the years 2015 and 2019. Since 2013, the University of Gothenburg is a member of the international network Scholars at Risk (SAR), which works to promote academic freedom around the world.

Sustainability and the environment

In 2004, the University of Gothenburg became the first university in the world to be environmentally certified under both ISO 14001 and EMAS. Education and research are the University of Gothenburg’s most important contributions to a sustainable development, and the University aims to become a European leader in the area.

The University offers a broader range of courses and study programs related to the environment and sustainable development and have a system of sustainability labelling of courses and programs. Environmental research is conducted in a large number of subject areas.

The Gothenburg Centre for Sustainable Development (GMV) at University of Gothenburg is responsible for the Environmental Management System (EMS). GMV ensures the EMS continued suitability, adequacy and impact for the whole university. The EMS comprises targets of activities of direct environmental impact as well as targets within research, education and outreach with society.

University of Gothenburg participated for the third year 2021 in the THE Impact Ranking on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) and was overall ranked 49 of 1 115 participating universities. In SDG 4 “Quality Education” University of Gothenburg ranked as number 4 in the world.
