Zero paper: towards a sustainable culture Unisabana
The environment is crying out for help because climate change is becoming more intense and notorious. Therefore, behaviors, cultures and decisions will be fundamental to mitigate the serious environmental impact. From this perspective, in the last few days the COP 26 took place, which brought together 196 countries in the most decisive event of the United Nations Organization (UNO) in environmental matters, and which will be the route to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) set to be met in 2030.
For this reason, Universidad de La Sabana is also developing different initiatives in accordance with these global strategic objectives, in order to reduce the ecological footprint and contribute to the construction of a third generation university.
These projects are led by the Environmental Sustainability Committee, which works on the implementation of very favorable strategies with the environment, to also have multiplying agents of messages that promote, This idea arose after the pandemic, when the opportunity to reduce the expenditure of this material in the different academic and administrative units was identified. To this end, we have strengthened the dissemination, promotion and participation of activities and actions that raise awareness of this situation, and encourage environmental education.
One of the initiatives is the “Zero Paper” project, which aims to stimulate responsibility, care and conservation of the environment in the university community, with a significant reduction in the use of paper.
This idea arose after the pandemic, when the opportunity to reduce the expenditure of this material in the different academic and administrative units was identified.
To this end, the digital culture has been strengthened in the University, with which the amount of equipment available for printing and paper consumption has been reduced by 41%. This initiative has been replicated in the faculties and administrative units that encourage the digitalization of processes, the reduction of the ecological footprint, and the construction of a more sustainable university aligned with good environmental practices.
Leonardo Moya, coordinator of Environmental Management, says in this regard that “We hope to have fewer printers in operation, make the purchase of paper with green seals and certifications that guarantee their commitment and friendly practices and work in coordination with the faculty and administrative staff so that environmental education is part of the sustainable culture of Unisabana”.
Finally, it is important to highlight that this type of initiative will allow Universidad de La Sabana to improve its possible score in the international ranking of sustainable campuses, Green Metric; through the “Zero Paper” project, it will contribute to the waste category it evaluates.
