Environmental award as a strategy for environmental sustainability at the University of Costa Rica
The Environmental Award Program was developed by the Environmental Management Unit in 2016 with the aim of strengthening an environmental culture that helps improve the quality of life of the University community and measure the degree of compliance with environmental management, consolidating an environmental culture in the university community and that is, in turn, transcends the work of each of the officials and students in their lifestyles.
To participate in the program, a tool is available that defines environmental practices to be implemented in their work spaces, classified into nine areas: administrative management, environmental education, supplies, waste, energy, water resources, air, mobility and compensation. .
Initially, there were 21 participating units, of which 14 were awarded, this number has been increasing in each edition and including all types of unit (administrative offices, faculties, schools, headquarters, campuses and experimental farms) and levels of progress (general , indicators, laboratory, student associations), achieving the direct impact of more than 3,000 people.
The fifth edition began with 63 registered units, but it has been adjusted due to the reduction in attendance at university facilities due to the pandemic. For this reason, this year the special mention called “Sustainable Homes” was created, in order to transfer good environmental practices to everyday life, seeking to transform habits and customs aimed at a sustainable environmental culture in the home.
This experience was so successful that in 2021 recognition of the Award will be gradually resumed in university facilities and the mention of Sustainable Homes will be re-launched.
