Universities will be decisive for sustainable development in this decade
The University of Costa Rica (UCR), together with 16 higher education institutions from America and Europe, assume their decisive role in environmental sustainability and tighten the screws to improve quality and sustainability practices, both in educational programs and in the operation from their college campuses.
To achieve this ambitious goal, from 2020 to 2023, the project “Change the Climate: Ensure the Quality of Environmental Strategies in Latin American Higher Education” is developed, financed by the European Union through Erasmus+, which has been declared of institutional interest by the UCR.
In this project, a consortium was formed that brings together 16 Higher Education Institutions that have the common interest of supporting quality management, environmental management and education for sustainable development. Among them, there are two Costa Ricans: the National University (UNA) and the University of Costa Rica (UCR).
The participation of the UCR is led by the Center for Research in Agricultural Economics and Agribusiness Development (CIEDA) under the coordination of Dr. Luis Vinicio Losilla Solano and has the support of the Environmental Management Unit (UGA).
For the UCR, this project is of great relevance because it will allow the exchange of experiences between universities to improve operations in environmental management through the implementation of systematic environmental practices and quality processes in education in accordance with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), promoting research and social action in sustainable development.
“It is the first time that universities in the world are promoting exchange because we have all already understood the importance of the role of universities as promoters and trainers of new generations who must be aware of this issue” stressed Emilia Martén, coordinator of the Unit of Environmental Management.
